First Reading

Stuart Langridge, her grandson

There is a season for everything.
A time for every occupation under heaven.
A time for giving birth; a time for dying.
A time for planting; a time for uprooting what has been planted.
A time for killing; a time for healing.
A time for knocking down, and a time for building.
A time for tears; a time for laughter.
A time for mourning, and a time for dancing.
A time for throwing stones away, and a time for gathering them up.
A time for embracing, and a time to refrain from embracing.
A time for searching, a time for losing, a time for keeping, and a time for throwing away.
A time for tearing, and a time for sewing.
A time for keeping silent, and a time for speaking.
A time for loving, a time for hating, a time for war, a time for peace.

Ecclesiastes

Second Reading

Niamh Langridge, her great-granddaughter

With God on our side, who can be against us? Since God did not spare his own Son but gave him up to benefit us all, we may be certain after such a gift that He will not refuse anything He can give. Could anyone accuse those who God has chosen? When God acquits, could anyone condemn? Could Jesus Christ? No! He not only died for us, he rose from the dead, and there at God's right hand He stands and pleads for us.

Nothing therefore can come between us and the love of Christ. Even if we are troubled, or worried, or being persecuted, or lacking food, or being threatened, or even attacked. These are the trials through which we triumph by the power of Him who loved us.

For I am certain of this: neither death, nor life, no angel, no prince, nothing that exists, nothing still to come, not any power or height or depth or any created thing can ever come between us and the love of God, made visible in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

Homily

Maria Langridge, her daughter, and Fr. Eamon Roche

Nell was born to the Ivory family in Lyre, Araglen; born sixth of eleven children. She started working at 14 years of age in Mitchelstown, and in the early 1950s she left Ireland for England. There, she met and married Michael Barry and were blessed with three children. They went to Regent's Park for their recreation because there was no garden in their own house in London. Nell used to rise at 4am, early in the morning, to go to work, and with her wages she bought the extras for the house. And the first thing she bought was a TV, and that was a gift for the whole family to share.

Her sister Mary (who can't be here today but is following on the live stream) came to live with them, and Mary then eventually moved to Stevenage, and a few years later Nell and Michael and their children Maria and Tim moved there too, where Caroline was born. Nell and Michael returned to Ireland in 1973, first to Kilworth and then to Fermoy.

Between 2001 and 2018 Nell lost her youngest daughter Caroline, her husband Michael, and her son Tim. But despite all of this, she stayed strong, cheerful, and kind, and the things that sustained her were her family, her friends, her community, and her faith.

One of the things that Nell really enjoyed was her membership in the Fermoy Active Retirement group. The meetings, the outings, and the two trips abroad that she took with them were highlights of her later years. There were many highs, and many lows, in Nell's life, and about the lows she always said: you have no choice, you have to cope. This corresponds to the gospel theme of perseverance, and Jesus asking us to carry our cross daily. But she always said such things with a smile. And she loved to chat. Everyone who knew her was aware of this aspect of her social character. One of the other characteristics of Nell was that she was very generous in both thought and in deed.

Nell was one of eleven children of the Ivory family of Lyre, Araglen. Two of those eleven now survive, Mary and Dave, and may the Lord bless them at this time.

Prayers of the Faithful

Today we are saddened by the loss of my Nan, whom we have loved. May our memories bring us comfort and turn sadness into joy. Lord, hear us.

Donna Jones, her granddaughter

Nell touched all our lives. Help us keep alive the values and ideals that she herself lived by. Lord, hear us.

Ricky Ivory, her nephew

May my great-grandma always live in our hearts and in our minds.
Lord, hear us.

Niamh Langridge, her great-granddaughter

We pray for all our deceased relatives and friends, especially Nell’s husband Michael, son Tim and daughter Caroline. May the Lord bring them into the light of his presence. Lord, hear us.

Stuart Langridge, her grandson

First Eulogy

Donna Jones, her granddaughter

You are a beautiful soul.

Some people are so special that even the sound of their name lights up our hearts and brings smiles to our faces. They are the beautiful souls who come into our lives and can kindle something so special inside of us. They add a touch of grace to the world around them that lifts the spirits of others. They aren't afraid to come alongside and share what they have learned.

This willingness and openness of their hearts sets them apart.

You are a beautiful soul, Nan, and a blessing to me. I am thankful to you. I have learned so many things from you, and I hope that you know how much you mean to me.

Second Eulogy

Stuart Langridge, her grandson

Our parents give us life. Our family gives us support. Our friends give us joy. And our grandparents... well, my grandma gave me this little torch thing that goes on your keys. And you might think, what? but ask yourself, how often do you reach for your keys?

And every time I do, I think of her.

Little acorns become great trees; small things lead to great memories. And no-one was a better source of great memories than Nell Barry. She told you stories, you told some to her, we told them about her; even yesterday at the removal it was wonderful to see how many people came in and told stories, remembering her, recalled seeing her crossing the bridge, or having run into her in town and stopped for a chat for only three or four hours. Whether that was people here in Fermoy or my dad Peter and Mary in England, and Ted in Australia, and Dave in California, and all across the world, they’ll tell you how she had to be the first into a pot of jam, even if you were the person who’d opened it on the other side of the room! How she always had to feel her clothes before she bought them, or about the flowers in her garden, all in beautiful bright colours.

Her son, Tim, bought her this model car, a Morris Traveller, and it's the car that she and my grandad, Michael Barry who many of you will remember, it's the car that they bought in England and returned to Ireland with, and her brother and her sister bought one too; the same car. I spoke to my dad about it, who’s watching us now, and he told me what the number plate on it was. ANK 595F. And I wrote it here on the front of the car, in tiny writing.

Michael, my grandad, if he were here with us? I think he’d say: “Her hair’s looking great!” Because he said that a lot. First of all because it always did: even now, her hair looks great. And also because... he knew what was good for him!

And it makes me think: Grandma, how well, how powerfully must you be loved, that everyone knows you. And everyone remembers you. And everyone has their own good memory of you. That people remember your laugh, or what you did at school in Lyre, or the number plate on the car on the trip back home half a century ago.

And, for me? What do I remember? I think this is what I have to say.

She’s crossed that bridge now one last time
A place in all our memoirs
The days this side seem darker now
Our sky tonight has no stars.

If life’s a stage, she played the lead
Put smiles in actors’ repertoires
The stage seems wrong with her not here
Today, this play has no stars.

With friends and family gathered here
It’s time to say our au revoirs
Our thoughts live on, but my grandma’s gone
And I rate this year: no stars.

Nell minded us when our mam was in hospital for an extended period of time. Actually she was more than a minder, to me she was a surrogate mum. She fought my corner more than once on why girls need more shoes and clothes than boys, and we always won. I will always be grateful to her for her time with us. She also introduced us to the potato steamer, and as she would say herself we had it for more than 20 years. Condolences to all her family and friends, she was a mighty woman and so glamorous ❤. Glad to be reunited with Michael no doubt. Susie O Farrell
